I’d rather be called an independent mother... I felt more single in my last marriage, she confides.
Iceland holds the highest rate of single mothers per capita in the world, with nearly two-thirds of babies in the country born to unwed mothers. The prevalence and acceptance of single parenthood here in Iceland, along with a stronger social safety net and benefits in contrast to other countries may explain why single mothers here have greater support and independence to pursue personal endeavors, careers and further education.
The unique historical and geographic context of the island has undoubtedly shaped and influenced Icelandic culture today. More significantly, lack of social stigma and a relaxed attitude towards marriage makes raising a family as a single parent more feasible, especially within smaller communities and families living in close proximity.
However, despite being recognized as an egalitarian society and the most feminist country in the world, there are still challenges facing women in Iceland. A considerable gender wage gap among the highest in Europe leaves female-headed households at a disadvantage with fewer resources.
Single mothers in Iceland may not have easy lives either, but they are afforded independence.
